Networking around Climate Change - New Approaches
People who weren’t here but should have been :-
Calvin Jones - Climate Change Action Blogspot
http://climatechangeaction.blogspot.com
Dave Hampton - Carbon Coach (with the balloon therapy)
http://www.carboncoach.com
Duncan Law - Transition Town Brixton
http://www.transitiontownbrixton.org
Jo Abbess leads off with a rant...
Networking ? I’ve had enough of making connections. When are we going to do something practical ?
New approaches ? We’ve tried all the possible ways to communicate Climate Change to people.
What on Earth is there that can work better ?
Practical Focus Groups ? Why are there not more groups focussing on practical projects ?
Meetings ? I’m all meeting’d out. Please, don’t ask me to another meeting.
Education and Communications ? This is often weak and content-free.
I don’t want BLAND.
What seems good is to try to create a virtuous circle leading
from electronic/virtual communications, through to
real meetings, through to practical projects, through to
persons of influence, and then back round to media and press.
Virtual
* Media - besides radio, streaming radio online, and webcasting, new approaches could
include podcasting, such as :-
http://www.switchpod.com
http://www.apple.com/itunes
downloading to portable devices.
Universities are now starting to use
podcasting for lectures and courses :-
https://www.netglearning.com
http://www.productivity501.com/free-academic-podcasts/78
http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/newsandevents/audio
* Publishing - books, brochures, leaflets, postcards are all valuable virtual tools :-
http://www.selfsufficientish.com
* Press Releases - self-generated publicity, any reason is a good reason (?)
LEADING TO...
Real
* Get to meet people, in a productive, positive way, for example over a
collaborative project, such as mapping a local area and community resources,
bringing such things as allotments and meeting venues to light.
* Use chance encounters to develop relationships that may be productive
in future, particularly in terms of those who have some measure of authority
within social structures.
* Calling a local meeting, showing a film and holding a discussion, proposing
a local project, maybe in a school…
* Example of possible model, or vehicle :-
http://www.chickswithbricks.com
which is centred on women in construction.
LEADING TO...
Practical
* Committing to taking part in a practical project is fulfilling to you and
inspiring to others. Examples include “Home Energy” evenings, with refreshments
just chatting about how home energy consumption.
* Resonance fm has practical projects :-
http://www.resonancefm.com
* Practical projects can be successful without a meeting programme - such
as the project “Food Upfront” - about creating edible gardens - the front gardens.
* Women’s Environmental Network food clubs
* Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs - a testing kit of various styles and types,
lent from one household to another. This could work for other things eg
draught-exclusion
* Super-hero “Draught-Busters” team, complete with flowing capes (and lycra leggings ?)
LEADING TO...
Policy / Influence
* Neighbourhood forums - get involved
* Find local eco-celebrities, either local councillors/mayors, traditional
environmentalists or ecologists, or popstars or TV personalities - and suggest
a collaboration
* Influential contacts can “just happen”
* The Climate Speaker Network can provide well-known and influential speakers
for an event :-
http://www.climate-speakers.org.uk
* TalkAction can also provide speakers :-
http://www.talkaction.org
* COIN (Climate Outreach Information Network) can also help with speaker contacts :-
http://coinet.org.uk
Outcomes / Outputs
* Moving the group focus between the different spheres of public life.
* Keep the group as ground, basic level, local as possible.
* Aim for key, fun, iconic projects - to maximise involvment, commitment and press impact.
